This is such a rare find! An 18-carat gold Victorian-era witches heart pendant with an old cut diamond and intricate champlevé enamelling. It is absolutely divine.
The diamond is bright and sparkles magnificently. It is in excellent condition and adds a beautiful twinkle to this stunning design.
Witch’s hearts were originally worn for their magical properties, thought to ward off evil spirits; however, during the 18th century, the symbol is also thought to be worn by someone who is 'bewitched by love'.
Champlevé is an enamelling technique in which troughs are carved into the surface of the metal and filled with vitreous enamel. The enamel is in wonderful antique condition, with some wear to the edges that can only be seen under magnification. If you look very closely, there is a tiny chip in the enamel under the bail that can be seen with the naked eye but is not noticeable as it is hidden by the bail placement. This does not detract from the beauty of this magical piece in any way.
